Indoor Athletics with Yewstock School
|
|
|
This has been a very special project. Pupils from Yewstsock have benefited
from weekly sessions in Athletics at Shaftesbury School. The programme was led
by jointly by Graham Jones (PDM) Keith Gearey (Yeovil Athletics Club) and CSLA
students from Shaftesbury School. The work was most rewarding for all concerned;
many pupils from Yewstock achieved considerable improvement in their Athletics
skill and achieved an award at Shaftesbury School Awards Ceremony in May. The
CSLA students furthered their knowledge and understanding of coaching and
thoroughly enjoyed seeing the progress of the Yewstock pupils.(picture)

Indoor Athletics Club
|
|
| Two Athletics clubs
have been running at Shaftesbury School this year; one club caters for pupils
from Years 5, 6 and 7 and the other for those in Years 8, 9 and 10. Coaches have
been provided by Active Sports. Teams from Years 5 and 6 participated in the
first ever County Indoor Athletics Championship at the Sir David English Sports
Centre, Bournemouth, in April. A development from these clubs has been the
establishment of links with Blandford Camp, where weekly coaching sessions are
now held in their impressive facilities.

Tag Rugby
|
|
This has been an exciting
development, funded by the Sports Partnership. Inspired by the renewed
enthusiasm for the game following England’s World Cup achievement, the Tag Rugby
programme has been extremely successful. Primary School teachers from 25 North
Dorset schools received training and teaching packs from Dan Brown, the RDO from
the Rugby Union. The schools were also given Tag Rugby kits containing balls,
belts, and whistles and teaching resources.
 |
Blandford School ran a Tag Rugby Festival in March; this was organised and
refereed by Sixth Form students and supported by Blandford Rugby Club. The
Sports Partnership gave prizes.
A Tag Rugby Festival, involving mixed teams from 14 schools was organised to
coincide with the ‘Sweet Chariot’ tour of the William Webb Ellis trophy to
Shaftesbury School on April 8th. The event was attended by hundreds of
enthusiastic spectators and all the teams were photographed with the prestigious
trophy! The winning school was Sherborne County Primary.

Talent Academy at Shaftesbury School
|
|
| A
five day talent camp was organised at Shaftesbury School during the Easter
holidays. 33 pupils from the North Dorset area were selected by SSCo’s, using
standardised tests developed by the Australian Institute of Sports ‘Talent
Search’. The Youth Sports Trust and Dorset County Council funded the project and
Bournemouth University provided mentors who worked with the pupils throughout
the week. Activities included Multi-Skills, gymnastics, athletics, SAQ and
kayaking and climbing at Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre. It was an
extraordinary week that enabled pupils to hone skills and acquire new ones; the
children grew in confidence and enjoyed the opportunity to work at a high level
with top class coaches. The most able pupils were identified and will be invited
onto the Junior Athlete Scholarship Scheme, which begins in September 2004.
