Move Over Simon Cowell, its Prop Idol!

03 February 2010

This past Wednesday (3rd February), four schools from across the NDSSP came together for the inaugural ‘Prop Idol’ competition. Year 7 and 8 girls from Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Sturminster Newton High School and The Gryphon School, were put through their paces on Shaftesbury school’s illustrious rugby pitches.

David Wilson from North Dorset RFU, put the girls through their paces on a cold afternoon. For many of the girls involved, this was their first real involvement in ‘contact’ Rugby. They took part in a series of games and skills drills aimed at improving their confidence before taking part in a series of ‘contact’ Rugby matches against each of the other schools.

The girls were split into small groups and worked with David and 6 Year Ten Sports Leaders from Shaftesbury.

As the afternoon wore on, it was evident that the girls had a fantastic time pushing tyre’s, moving weights and experiencing the full enjoyment of tackle bags!

The idea of the event was to give those girls who may not normally have experienced ‘contact’ Rugby, to indeed be given that chance, and judging by the smiles on the many faces at the end of the afternoon it was clear that ‘Prop Idol’ was a success.

A huge thank you must go to David Wilson and Hamish Morton at the Dorset RFU the members of staff who supported this event and the 6 Year Ten Sports Leaders.

We look forward to seeing you all next year!
