New Girls football Team Launched SNUFC

01 March 2010
Words: Dorset FA

Girls in North Dorset made history by being the first girls to play football as part of Sturminster Newton United FC.

Fourteen girls from the local area attended the first of eight Saturday morning sessions being run at Sturminster Newton FC; an FA Charter Standard club. The hope is that word will spread and more girls will sign up and join in as the weeks go on.

Leon Jennings who is the club welfare officer and an FA qualified coach has launched the initiative with backing from the club committee and aims to start up two girls teams. Those in school years 3&4 will take part in the “Girls Go for Goal” pilot scheme run by Dorset FA and the FA Skills team starting in May and the others will play friendlies and enter tournaments before the start of next season.

The initial 8-week programme has been funded by Active Dorset and the Sport Unlimited scheme, a fund which supports community groups and clubs to offer children the opportunity to access additional sports provision outside of school hours. The club is also being supported by Clare Nichols, women and girls football development officer for Dorset FA.
