Striking and Fielding at The Gryphon 1
On Tuesday 30th June 150 year 4 pupils from 6 of the Sherborne area primary schools gathered together at The Gryphon School. The purpose of the day was to learn new skills associated with Striking and Fielding games.
The festival was organised by Tom Symons (Dorset Competition Manager) with the Support of Rachel Troughton and year 9 Sports Leaders from The Gryphon School.
The day kicked off with a series of skill practices where groups of children rotated around different activity stations. Each station focussed on a specific skill and gave the pupils a chance to consolidate old skills and develop new ones. The highlight of this part of the day was the chance to learn how to bowl overarm with county coaches David Barton, Hugh Shackel and Phil Norton.
Participants were put in to teams with pupils from other schools which gave them the chance to meet new friends. In these teams they worked hard to earn points at each station. Thee points were totalled at the end of the morning to find the winners.
The Sports Leaders put up a fantastic show on this their first event. They worked tirelessly to set up the activities, coach and organise the participants and they remained positive and encouraging throughout the day.
After a well earned lunch break the pupils were put back in to their school teams for an inter school competition. For this each team had the opportunity to use their newly rehearsed skills in a game of diamond cricket and rounders.
2pm saw the end of a successful day of sport and weary children and staff made their way home.
Many thanks to all involved in making the day so enjoyable!
