Lottery Project

£96,000 LOTTERY WINDFALL 2004-2010.

A total of £96,000 of Lottery funding has been spent in North Dorset Schools to provide opportunities for students to access additional lunchtime and after school activities. The projects have provided staff training and equipment, and in some cases delivery of sessions by qualified community coaches. We hope that as a result of this input many of these activities will continue to be delivered in the area in the future. The activities have included:-

Tag Rugby

For children in Primary schools. Money has paid for rugby equipment and training and resources for teachers. Schools aim to set up after school tag rugby clubs, leading to an end of term tournament.

Sportshall Athletics

Here the funds paid for each secondary school in the Partnership to purchase indoor athletic equipment. This has enabled the schools to host indoor athletic clubs to which they have invited young athletes from their feeder schools to attend. Here they have received expert coaching (also provided by the award) and the opportunity to take part in competitions outside of the normal, summer season.

Indo Boarding

Designed by Hunter Joslin, an avid user of balance boards since 1965, the INDO BOARD balance trainer is simple, stable and user friendly. Anybody can ride with a few basic instructions and something to hold onto initially. The learning curve is a mere 10 to 15 minutes for most. After that, Indoboarding becomes routinely easy and fun. Originally designed for surf balance training, indo boarding increases core strength, leg strength and balance co-ordination. It is a great cross training tool for any sporting discipline that requires agility & balance. The product's simplicity has enabled it to become a truly multifunctional fitness tool. Most importantly, once again, it's FUN!

The funding has enabled Kevin Hubble, Jason Fern & Adrian Roland, from Indoeurope to deliver sessions in each of the Partnership secondary schools, and for several sets of equipment to be purchased for use in those schools. The project has been so successful that the North Dorset School Sport Partnership was one of 3 SSPs shortlisted for a national innovation award for "The creation of a new activity/approach to engaging the diverse needs of young people" in 2008. This was presented by Baroness Sue Campbell, Chair of the Youth Sport Trust and UK Sport, in recognition of the work the Partnership is doing with Indoeurope using Indo Boards in North Dorset secondary schools; work which we are currently continuing to build upon.

The lottery funding has provided all schools with an opportunity to attend staff training courses and receive equipment. Tri-golf, the primary version, is now being delivered in North Dorset schools both as an after school club and as part of the PE curriculum, and in some cases as part of the mathematics curriculum.  Schools are also given the opportunity to access a national competition pathway.

Rock-It Ball

Rock-It-Ball is a British athletic invention. A new, fast-moving ball sport which evolved, in North Yorkshire (Great Britain) in 2005, it was officially launched at the Youth Sport Trust's Sports Colleges Conference in Feb 2006.

Since its launch Rock-It-Ball has spread rapidly through schools in the UK and has also started to be adopted by colleges, universities, community projects, youth organisations, the military, Primary Care Trusts, leisure centres and prisons and features on four of the Youth Sport Trust's programmes. In its short life Rock-It-Ball has had great impact in the field of education in promoting honesty in sport and increasing participation amongst children who don't generally enjoy participating in 'normal' team games. As a sport Rock-It-Ball is one of the few areas where male and female players compete on an equal basis. Not a derivative of any particular sport Rock-It-Ball has elements of several sports, particularly dodgeball and lacrosse, and is played by players of all abilities and many disabilities.

In addition to this, the following projects were undertaken using this funding:-
Speed Stacking
• Playground Activity Leaders (PALs)
• Tae Kwon-Do

Street Jazz: This was two, linked projects. One provided for children in primary schools while the other provided for pupils in secondary schools. The money paid for a dancer to come into schools where she worked with the children for eight weeks. At the end of each project the students had the opportunity to tour their dance round local schools and to attend a professional dance performance.
Multi Skills clubs: This project was aimed at younger children and aims to develop the fundamental movement skills that underpin all athletic performance. The funds here paid for training for the teachers and equipment for the schools. Once trained schools set up clubs for their children.
Wake and Shake: This is an early morning exercise programme of movement to music. The moves are simple and fun and are designed to energise the pupils for the coming day. Studies show that most quality learning goes on in the morning and that this type of approach assists the process. The project bought resources and teaching packs for each school. Schools have now gone a step further, developing their own routines.
Speed Agility Quickness: This is the training programme that underpinned the England Rugby World Cup winning squads preparations. It is a system of training the body to achieve a better quality of movement. It is applicable to any age and ability range. The money paid for all schools to train teachers in its application and provided them all with equipment to deliver the activity.
Healthy Living: A project which goes right to the heart of the programme. It was aimed at students who may be overweight, have an unhealthy diet and take little exercise. Here we employed a personal trainer who worked on a regular basis with these students. Their job was to introduce them to a basic exercise programme, while giving them advice on diet. Funds here paid for the hire of the personal trainer and appropriate fitness facilities.
Football at Yewstock: Expert coaching and equipment was provided for pupils at Yewstock School to promote a programme of inter-school matches between Yewstock and other mainstream schools.
Outdoor Education with Yewstock and Shaftesbury SEN students: Equipment was purchased to support this project, during which students worked with members of staff from each school on activities which encouraged teamwork and cooperation, and help build self confidence. This culminated in a week-end camping trip during each year of the project.
